Billy Whizz duties in The Beano

Yes, as some of you guessed from last week's tricky teaser, I recently got the job of writing and drawing Billy Whizz for The Beano. On the strength of the Badd Lads stuff I did for the current Dandy annual, another strip originated by Malcolm Judge, the Ed asked me for a traditional Malcolm Judge style Billy.
And traditional is what I'm giving him! Here's the whole family, in my second Billy Whizz page, appearing in this week's Beano.
Elsewhere in the Beano, parents are being modernised all over the place -- both Minnie the Minx and Dennis the Menace have got shiny new modern-looking parents. But not Billy -- the ed and I decided we'd go right back to the bow-tie and moustache wearing original Mr Whizz.
For my part in that decision, I think bow ties and moustaches are funny. (No offence intended to any bow-tie wearing moustachioed men -- or indeed women -- reading this)

  2. May I just say that your Billy Whizz is absolutely incredible? Honestly, I never imagined it before but you are the perfect artist for Billy Whizz! I'm so happy to see you in The Beano as well - the more Dawbarn, the better!

    1. Aw, thank you Harry, you may indeed. I'm still settling in to the job, getting used to drawing the characters, and working on my colouring a bit -- trying to get it a bit more 'on message'.
But it's great to hear you like how it's going so far, and it's a lot of fun to work on. :D

    1. Thanks, Kev! That'd be fun, for sure, but don't hold your breath.

  4. So, ah, what can we expect from you in the digital dandy? Anything you can tell us? Or even just if you're doing something for it, as it would be great to see your work in there.

    1. Thanks :D I am supposed to be doing something for it -- a brand new project, my own idea. That's probably as much as I can tell you right now.
Although I have to add I've not heard much from them for a while and I can't really progress the project til I do...

  5. Looking good. And very much like Billy as I remember him.

It's a very weird character design isn't it? Those two hairs (with the rest of the head shaved bald!) confused the hell out of me when I was a kid, especially as his Dad and brother also had them. I can remember thinking for a while that they were antennae and that it must be a family of aliens!

    1. Heh, those hairs are a bit odd, I suppose, though I think I always just accepted them without question. There's a strip in the Beano Book 1970 in which Dad, Alfie and Billy go for a haircut, and get thrown out of the barbershop because of all the whizz-related trouble Billy causes:
Dad (looking up with annoyance at the two long hairs): 'One of these days I'll get all of my hair cut before I get thrown out of the barber's!'
